Buchholz, Thomas Walter
Born on August 27th 1961 in Eisenach (Thüringen)/Germany Thomas Buchholz has successfully completed his education as technician of pianos at Blüthner in Leipzig.
Until 1988 he studied solo singing, composition (Günther Neubert) and music pedagogy (H.-G. Mehlhorn) at the University of Music and Theatre »Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy« Leipzig (Hochschule für Musik und Theater, or HMT).
Furthermore he was master-class-student of Ruth Zechlin for composition at the Academy of Arts in Berlin (Akademie der Künste zu Berlin) from 1989-1991. His studies were complemented by lessons of composition with Rudolf Kelterborn, Witold Lutosklawski and John Cage.
His works have been performed in many countries in Europe, in Japan and the USA and also have been complemented by radio broadcasting- and CD-productions. With more than 160 individual works published by international publishers just as Schott Music, Verlag Neue Musik, Hofmeister
etc. his complete works are extensive, covering almost all genres of contemporary music.
In addition, Buchholz received various scholarships and composition prizes, as well as support from the DAAD and Goethe-Institut during several stays abroad (Petersburg, Moskau, Vilnus, Jerewan). As a lecturer he participated at national and
international seminars and workshops on new music.
The cooperation with important international artists and ensembles like Howard Arman, Georg Christopher Biller, Christfried Brödel, Clemen Leben, Carin Levine, Reinbert Evers, the Hilliard Ensemble, the choir and orchestra of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the
Thomanerchor in Leipzig, the Münchner Kammerchor, the Jerewaner Kammerchor, vocal modern or the Stadtsingechor Halle influenced his compositional work. Many of his works were commissioned for these artists and ensembles.
In 2018 his composition Friede und gute Zeit (Schott) was a compulsory piece in the final round of the German choir competition (Deutscher Chorwettbewerb). In 2006 he received the assignment for the orchestra work Die Stadt (Int. Sternscher Musikverlag)
for the 120th anniversary of the city of Halle. In 2016 he composed his work Nongeti (Schott) for the 900th anniversary of the Stadtsingechor, after previously having published the cantata Aus der Tiefe (Schott) for the 800th anniversary
of the Thomanerchor Leipzig. On the occasion of the commemoration of the Armenian genocide he completed the cycle of Armenian Hymns (Schott) in 2015, which was performed at various cultural highlights in Germany and Armenia.
In 2018/19 Buchholz was commissioned by the Anhaltinische Philharmonie Dessau for his large orchestral coposition Feininger-Fraktale (Verlag Neue Musik) on the occasion of the Bauhaus anniversary.
In addition to his work as a compositor, Buchholz worked as a university lecturer, music pedagogue and conductor. Since 1998 he has been teaching regularly at the Yerevan Komitas Conservatory in Armenia. In 1999 he was appointed full professor of composition there.
For many years, he has dedicated himself to the next generation of artists in the composers' class of Saxony-Anhalt (Komponistenklasse Sachsen-Anhalt). Some of his students are successful composers and music educators themselves.
His musicological publications were focused on tradition and modernity, and he has also published research papers on Georg Anton Benda and scientific editions of historical music (Edition Gravis).
In addition, Buchholz is considered an expert on the music of Armenia and has released various publications and editions of works on the composer Komitas. He is regularly invited as a lecturer to international scientific conferences.
Thomas Buchholz is active in various honorary functions, such as deputy chairman of the Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt regional association of the German Composers' Association (Deutscher Komponistenverband or DKV).
From 1996 to 2014 he was artistic director of the Hallische Musiktage.
